February’s Teacher of the Month – CJ Young
This month we are spotlighting CJ Young, who teaches drums, beginning piano and guitar. CJ is quite an accomplished musician and knows what “teaching” means. He is a freelance musician and teacher in the Pittsburgh area. He attended Mt. Lebanon High School and earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University – Bloomington. His musical studies started at age 9 with local Canonsburg piano teacher Melody Sharp and continued in public school with the drums at age 11. His father gifted him a guitar at age 14 that he learned to play by ear and by 18 he had acquired a bass guitar to round out the instruments on which he currently gives lessons. While at IU, CJ studied with master drummer Steve Houghton and jazz great David Baker.
CJ has taught at many high schools throughout Indiana and the Pittsburgh area including award winning bands Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, IN and Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls, PA. His playing experience is from a diverse array of musical situations including cruise ships, musicals, marching bands, professional drum lines, big bands, jazz groups, and rock bands. Currently, CJ is a member of a few bands that play at area venues such as the Hard Rock in Pittsburgh.
We are very proud that CJ is one of our music instructors here at David’s Music House. Come visit CJ sometime and talk to him about music. Check out our Music Lesson page on our website for detail about all of our music teachers.
